Netflix HDR Available Only to 4-Screen Plan Members, Select Devices

Today, Netflix has refreshed its list of devices to which it added the High Dynamic Range (HDR) video support feature.

The major streaming service provider added three new premium Android smartphones on the roster: the LG G7 One, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium, and the Sony Xperia XZ3.

These three smartphone models have display properties that can present HDR content. They can show fuller colors and more lucidity in the dark and bright sections of the picture.

High Dynamic Range or HDR is a technology that enhances the color and contrast in a digital picture. An HDR video, used for both videos and photos, is captured in the same manner as an HDR photo.

The results are usually a brighter and clearer image. However, not all content of Netflix features an HDR option.

The streaming service behemoth’s HDR feature is available for subscribers of the 4-Screen Netflix plan that comes together with HDR video support.

By offering the four-screen choices, this membership package is more expensive than the basic tier one which most Netflix subscribers avail.

Furthermore, according to the Netflix Help Center, the Netflix application version 5.0 is necessary to access HDR streaming in Android devices.

The digital device should be capable of supporting either HDR10 or Dolby Vision and Netflix as well.

If owners use a set-top box when streaming Netflix, both the TV and the set-top box must be capable of supporting HDR.

The subscriber’s Internet connection has to be stable and with a speed of 25 megabits per second or higher. Finally, the quality of streaming should be set to “High.”

Netflix has developed its HDR video support, targeting more high-end smartphones. It is facilitating the digital device owners to watch HDR programs on their mobile devices.

Last year, the streaming service giant started to add HDR video support for Android digital devices. Among these gadgets were the LG G6 and the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Due to the limited number of premium handsets with HDR capability being sold in the market, the availability of HDR video support has been sluggish.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 and the Huawei P20 followed suit later on.  Other smartphones that added Netflix’s HDR video support feature include the iPhone X, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the LG V30, the LG V35, and the Razer Phone, among others.

The Help Center found on Netflix’s official website contains the complete list of the HDR-supported digital devices.
