Max customers could be in for major disappointment in the near future, especially if you’re a sports fan. Last year in October, a Bleacher Report Sports Add-On came on the scene, and this didn’t seem to cost anything extra for customers. There was a point that Max planned to charge customers $10 for this service, but in March 2024 they decided to avoid doing this. However, this is already looking like it could change.
A Bloomberg report has indicated that customers may have to start paying for the sports add-on by the end of this month. Originally, customers were due to be charged from February 2024, which would have been set up just in time for the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament.
However, in January, it proved difficult for Warner Bros. Discovery to come to agreements with all of their partners, which meant that they wouldn’t be able to charge customers for a few more months.
If these negotiations continue to no avail, customers would likely continue to avoid a charge. One thing is even more certain however – there will be a charge for this service eventually. WBD are losing customers from a cable standpoint, and need to make sure that their streaming platorms are bringing in as much revenue as possible.
NBA is likely to already be on the way out, as TNT will no longer broadcast live games beyond this season. WBD would need to win pro basketball rights in order to keep streaming this.
It seems that WBD have made preperations for this potential loss, and have secured deals to broadcast more College Football, Mountain West Football and Big East Basketball. Not only this, but they have secured a major deal to broadcast the French Open Tennis Tournament for 10 years.
Customers will have a decision to make once they charge eventually comes in.
