YouTube has been dominating the streaming world for quite some time now, and the month of August saw YouTube go to even higher levels. The platform were able to claim 10.6% of all TV watched in August, which is higher than giants such as Netflix and Hulu. You’d think that Youtube wouldn’t look elsewhere for inspiration with dominance like this, but this isn’t the case.
It seems that Youtube have its eyes set on a new interface, which would be quite different to what we are used to. The main focus will be subscriptions, and making it much easier to subscribe to channels. It will also be a lot easier to look at previews, and access to links via description will be a breeze.
“Fundamentally, what we’re trying to do is make sure that we’re ultimately delivering results for creators and helping them achieve the vision of what they expect for their programming in the living room,” said Christian Oestlien, VP of product management at YouTube.
As of 2025, Youtube will give creators the option to organize their uploads into seasons, which will lead to a interface that looks very similar to Netflix. Customers will be able to “binge watch” in a similar fashion, also making it easier to find their favourite episodes.
YouTuber Michelle Khare said: “It’s a really great way for the audience to discover a creator and discover a show, just like you would when you’re browsing on another streaming service, where you watch one episode, you can clearly see the full season laid out, and it can encourage the viewer to want to keep watching, or even download the whole season before their flight to watch,”
Youtube remains the most used service among 18-44 year olds in the United States, according to a 2023 survey. A move like this could move Youtube into unprecedented territory.
